The English Undergraduate Student Organization or EUSO club is coming back to New Mexico State University after 12 years, according to NMSU English professor Harriet Linkin.
EUSO is a club for anyone who is interested in English, said Lindsey Jones, the student who pushed to start the club back up. The next official meeting will be on Jan. 22, 2010, at Corbett Center on the second floor (above Java City) at 1:30 p.m.
Need for this club
“I wanted to bring the club back so that English majors can hang out and meet people with like interests,” Jones said.“About 15 people went to the first meeting, and we expect that even more will go to the next ones.
“I am very excited and think there’s a lot of excitement in the department (faculty and students) to see EUSO starting up again,” Linkin said.
EUSO has just been officially chartered and has many plans for next semester.
“EUSO has an excellent chance at being a successful chartered club. There are already enough students to get the club chartered, but the more students involved, the better EUSO will be,” Linkin said.
Past activities and future plans
The new club is planning to go to a conference in Utah near the end of the spring semester, according to Jones. EUSO will also be hosting a speed workshop on Jan. 15, 2010.
“The old club was definitely a benefit to the department. It was wonderful to have a student organization organizing student and faculty symposia, book sales, community outreach, information on how to apply to graduate programs and social activities,” Linkin explained.
During the first meeting, students were interested in fund raising for writers conferences, bringing authors to NMSU to read, networking to help students get internships and jobs, study groups – and more, according to Jones. The club is still open to new ideas.
“EUSO has a facebook page, yahoo group and twitter account,” Jones said.
“I expect the club to be a community,” junior English major Ruby Sanchez predicted.
