The holiday weather and holiday season were well received by thousands of people in Las Cruces joining in the tree lighting and Winterfest in the Downtown Mall. More than 40 vendors were in attendance and people bundled up with hot cups of cocoa keeping them warm. The weather didn’t stop people from coming out and enjoying all the activities the evening had to offer.
“The Winterfest was founded by the neighborhood organizations who really wanted to start to see some community celebrations going on during the holidays,” said Executive Director of the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership Cindy Fargo.

The tree lighting ceremony has been held every year for around 20 years. Although the City didn’t have anything to do with the Winterfest, city officials said it was a great idea to have one event after another.
“As far as the city of Las Cruces and our staff and council and the city manager, I think it’s important for us to show that we participate in the holiday and I think a good sign of that is to have this ceremony,” said Special Events/Public Affairs Coordinator Robert Caldwell.

The festivities continued after the tree lighting in the downtown mall between Griggs and Las Cruces Avenue. Residents got an opportunity to ride a horse-drawn trolley, and do some Christmas shopping.
There was also live music from the band Nuevo Sol, who brought down the house with their version of “Run Run Rudolph.” In the Rio Grande Theatre residents could warm themselves inside and watch scenes from the Nutcracker.
Of course, no holiday celebration would be complete without the big man himself. Yes, Santa Clause was there to greet children and hand out candy. In its third year of bringing in the holiday cheer, next year’s celebration should be marked on the calendar!
