According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of September this year, New Mexico’s unemployment rate is at 7.7 percent. Although it is below the national average, which in October  rose to 10.2 percent, students preparing to graduate in December have reason for concern. New Mexico State University Career Services, located in Garcia Annex, is putting its self out there to aid students in their search for a job.

“We don’t expect for everyone to be registered with us, but know that we are there,” said Associate Director of Career Services, Roseanne Bensley. Preparing an effective resume is one important step.

Starting early

The NMSU Career Exploration Center offers testing for students not sure what field they want to enter. If students are sure of their career choice, then making an effort to understand what this field  requires of them after they receive their degree. Most often that means internships or some sort of experience in that desired job.

“A degree is one of the facets that make you qualified, but it is not the end-all facet,” Bensley said.  “It’s a combination that your employers are looking for.”

Discovering resources

In this age of social networking, students are utilizing the Internet as a resource. Bensley points out a social site for networking called LinkedIn. But she wants students to also seek out their friends, family and professors as alternatives in finding the path for a career. Of course, Career Services offers other resources as well, such as AggieTrak that offers a career planning timeline, resume critiques and cover letter help, which can be accessed 24 hours a day.

Do your homework

If you have that elusive job interview, Career Services is able to help with preparation, but job seekers should do their homework.

“Getting a job is like a courtship, get to know their likes and dislikes,” explained Bensley. This could be the difference between you and the other candidates. Bensley notes Career Services is open from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. most weekdays.
