Many students may not be aware that here on campus, free counseling sessions are available in room 100 on the first floor of the Garcia Annex from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
The assumption that you need to be a full time student is false. All NMSU students are allowed up to 15 counseling sessions per academic year. A requirement of only one course must be taken here at the main campus.
Help is always available
“All students are encouraged to call the CALL (Crisis Assistance Listening Line) if they need support outside of sessions. Students are encouraged to come in to the counseling center for walk-in hours should they have a crisis between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday,” said Pre-Doctoral Intern Sandy Newsome.
The number to the CALL (crisis assistance listening line) is (575) 646-2255. All calls are completely confidential. If you would like more information click here.
These campus psychologists see about four – five clients a day. There are many different reasons for students to seek counseling. Academic counseling is among the most common.
“I have come in a couple times during the past years, mostly when I get stressed about school,” said a senior who did not wish to be identified. “I first discovered the counseling center when I got offered extra credit points for coming to a certain number of sessions while taking a CEP course. Since then, I have come in when school has become overwhelming. It has helped me not only with school related stress but also to deal with everyday issue that make me nervous.”
Group sessions are also offered each semester at room 100 in the Garcia Annex. There are at least six different topics and groups. For more information you can call (575) 646-2731 or click here.
